Some backyards come with constraints that make the job a little more interesting. This homeowner wanted a solid outdoor space for a hot tub but had to stay within local impervious surface limits - meaning we couldn't just lay down a standard concrete or solid paver pad and call it a day. So we went a different route.

We built a permeable paver patio instead. The gaps between the pavers allow water to pass through rather than run off, which keeps the space compliant while still giving a firm, clean surface underfoot. It's a practical solution that doesn't sacrifice anything on the aesthetic side - the dark charcoal pavers laid out in a staggered pattern look sharp and hold up well over time.

We also expanded the landscape bed along the side of the house and added a row of columnar arborvitae for privacy. The bed itself was finished with river rock and edged with a clean curved border, which keeps maintenance low and the whole area looking intentional. A few hostas tucked in add some texture without making it high-maintenance.

The before photos tell the story pretty clearly - bare dirt, a couple of stepping stones, and nothing tying the space together. The covered area under the deck had real potential, it just needed a plan. What we ended up with is a functional, well-framed outdoor space that actually feels like it belongs there.

That's the goal with every patio and landscaping job we take on. Work within the constraints, solve the problem the right way, and build something the homeowner is going to enjoy using. No shortcuts, no cutting corners on the details.
