A pool area without landscaping always feels unfinished. The hardscape is there, the water is there - but everything around it just looks like an afterthought. That's exactly what we were working with here. Bare dirt surrounding the entire back of the property, no planting beds, no structure. Nothing tying the pool to the rest of the yard.

We started from scratch on a lot of this. Fresh sod went in across the open areas to get grass established where there was nothing but graded soil. From there, we built out the planting beds along the fence line and around the pool perimeter - clean edging, dark brown mulch, and a solid mix of ornamental grasses, shrubs, and trees that give the space some life without making it high-maintenance. The raised planter walls with block retaining steps near the patio added a layered feel that connects the hardscape to the plantings in a way that makes sense.

We also handled the irrigation adjustments and repaired some of the older landscape areas that weren't working the way they should. That part matters a lot more than people realize. New plants and fresh mulch won't perform well if the water isn't getting where it needs to go. Getting the irrigation dialed in is what actually keeps everything looking good long-term.

The boulder groupings alongside the fence add some natural weight to the beds without needing constant upkeep. The ornamental grasses running along the pool fence give movement and texture right at eye level from the lounge chairs. Every element had a reason for being there - not just to look good on day one, but to hold up and stay manageable over time.

A backyard like this should feel like an extension of the house. When the landscaping is done right, the whole property feels intentional. That's what we were going for here - and that's what this ended up being.
